Emergency Safety Showers

What Are Chemical Safety Showers?

Safety showers are designed to alleviate the damage caused by exposure to chemical substances that could cause harm to an individual.  If your industry or sector comes into regular contact with chemical substances, it is important you have the right equipment and training in place in the event of a chemical accident. The moment a corrosive chemical comes into contact with skin, it begins to cause tissue damage, with the damage becoming more serious every second. Emergency showers are normally the first method to remove hazardous substances and can prevent any further damage occurring due to contamination.

Industries/Workplaces Exposed To Chemical Substances

Many industries and workplaces are frequently exposed to chemical and corrosive substances. These workplaces should have precautionary equipment in place in case of a chemical incident, such as an emergency chemical safety shower. Common workplaces exposed to chemical substances include:

  • Chemical manufacturing and distribution sites
  • Metallurgy Industry
  • Paper Industry
  • Water treatment sites
  • Chemical laboratories
  • Food and drink manufacturing sites
  • Emergency services

If you work with chemicals in one of these industries, or similar and have the risk of a significant chemical splash but do not have access to a safety shower(s), you should speak to your Health and Safety officer. In accordance with regulations (EN15154 Standards), emergency safety showers must be accessible within 10-seconds from the area where you are working with corrosive substances.

In the event of accidental contact with a corrosive chemical can you get to your emergency shower in 10 seconds, in accordance with the EN15154 standards? If not consider our portable showers - they can go wherever the risk goes!

Operating A Chemical Safety Shower

Emergency safety showers must be easy to operate.  If you are unsure how to operate your particular equipment at work, ask your Health and Safety officer or co-ordinator for direction. Other important things to consider when using chemical shower:

  • Maintain a clear area around the equipment
  • Check equipment regularly to make sure it works properly
  • Know the location of the equipment at all times
